.May 22, 2024 at 14:54Wednesday, 05/22/2024 UN nuclear chief says Raisi's death stalled talks with IAEA
The deaths of Iran's president and foreign minister in a helicopter crash have caused a pause in the UN nuclear watchdog's talks with Tehran over improving cooperation with the agency, the watchdog's chief told Reuters on Wednesday.
The IAEA had planned to resume technical discussions with Iran for about a year now, but these plans were put on hold following last weekend's crash that killed President Ebrahim Raisi and his delegation.
Tehran recently barred many of the most experienced uranium-enrichment experts from the IAEA's inspection team and continues to fail to explain the presence of uranium traces at undeclared sites despite a years-long investigation by the IAEA.
Iran is enriching uranium to 60% purity, close to weapons-grade, which no other country has done without creating nuclear weapons.
