US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says fugitive Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had assured him the day before the fall of Kabul that he would fight to the death.

Mr Blinken told CBS television that Ghani had left the day after the promise.

The Taliban entered Kabul last Sunday without resistance from government forces.
