Wolcott: Iran’s level of uranium enrichment violates the nuclear deal
Jackie Wolcott, the U.S ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a statement announcing that Iran is breaching the terms of the nuclear deal (JCPOA) by using advanced centrifuges and speeding up its uranium enrichment.
In a statement addressing the 35 board member countries of the IAEA, Wolcott said: “Iran has claimed that it continues to comply with the JCPOA, but it is now reported to be in clear violation of the deal. This should be of great concern to all of us.”
She stated that Iran’s decision to accelerate its uranium enrichment is cause for concern, but it will not force Washington to back down from isolating Iran. Wolcott added: “Attempting to generate negotiating leverage 1 kg of uranium at a time will not bring sanctions relief,”
According to the latest IAEA report, Iran has installed 33 new IR6 centrifuges in its nuclear facilities, but only ten have been tested by uranium injections so far. According to the JCPOA, eight years need to pass since the signing of the JCPOA before Iran can start using 30 centrifuges of IR6 model.
IAEA’s latest report states that Iran has increased its enriched uranium reserves from 163.8 kg to 174.1 kg, and it is only 28.7 kg away from its limit set by the JCPOA.
According to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, the enrichment of3.67 uranium has quadrupled in Natanz nuclear facility.
