The White House issued a statement announcing the continuation of national emergency with respect to Iran for one more year.

The statement reads: “Our relations with Iran have not yet normalized, and the process of implementing the agreements with Iran, dated January 19, 1981, is ongoing.  For this reason, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in Executive Order 12170 with respect to Iran.”

The executive order 12170 was issued by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. The order was issued after the US embassy in Tehran was occupied by the revolutionaries which ended diplomatic relations between two countries and started a series of economic sanctions that have continued with various severity in the past 40 years.

The executive order known as the “national emergency situation” with regards to Iran was first signed by President Clinton and every president since has extended the order.

The order issued by President Trump states: “have sent to the Federal Register for publication the enclosed notice stating that the national emergency with respect to Iran declared in Executive Order 12170 of November 14, 1979, is to continue in effect beyond November 14, 2019.”
