Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba:

Ukraine will not allow Iran to escape responsibility for downing UIA plane

In response to contradictory comments from Iranian officials about shooting down the Ukrainian passenger jet, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said In a live TV interview that Ukraine will in no way allow Iran to escape its responsibility for the incident.

"We will in no way allow Iran to escape the responsibility for the tragedy that occurred and will work with them to get the [black] boxes, to agree on the parameters of legal responsibility for what happened. And here we will act not alone but together with our partners, first and foremost, with Canada," Kuleba said.

On Sunday, Iranian MP Hassan Norozi had claimed in an interview that the plane “had certain objectives in Iran and I believe the armed forces performed their duty correctly, therefore there will not be any arrests or punishments.”

The deputy prime minister of Ukraine responded to these comments in a tweet calling them an insult to the lives of the victims, and demanded the government’s immediate clarification.

“As is the case in our country, lawmakers may say whatever they want to raise their rating inside the country, rely on facts, manipulate facts... We must rely on official information, so when we get official information from Iran, we will draw the relevant conclusions," Kuleba said.

The Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) plane (Flight PS752) heading from Tehran to Kyiv was shot down by IRGC missiles shortly after taking off from the Imam Khomeini International Airport on January 8. All the 176 people on board died.
