Turkey Plans To Deport Iranian Anti-Mandatory Hijab Feminist Refugee

Mariam Shariatmadari, one of the “Girls of Inqilab Street” who protested against the mandatory hijab, released a video reporting that the Turkish police have arrested her, and she could be deported to Iran.

Shariatmadari who escaped Iran after her release from prison currently lives in the city of Denizli in Turkey. She said the Turkish immigration police has arrested her for no reason by claiming she doesn’t have the necessary documents and is now being deported along with several others.

Some sources reported that after being transferred to the police station, Shariatmadari was taken to the hospital for the coronavirus test. A coronavirus test is necessary for flights between Iran and Turkey.

In February of 2018, Mariam Shariatmadari stood on a telephone box in Inqilab street and lifted her white scarf in her hand in protest to the mandatory hijab. Police forces attacked her and threw her to the ground which broke her leg.

The video of the incident went viral and she was arrested as a result and was held in custody for a long time until she received a sentence of one year in prison.

She escaped Iran right after and has lived in Turkey for almost two years.
