Trump Imposes “Highest Level” Sanctions on Iran's Central Bank
President Trump announced new sanctions against the central (national) bank of Iran on Friday in response to the attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities.
In a joint interview with Scot Morrison, the prime minister of Australia in the White House, President Trump announced that the new sanctions on Irani’s national bank are the “highest sanctions ever imposed on a country,” adding that the sanctions go “right to the top.”
Secretary of Treasury, Steve Mnuchin says the goal of these sanctions is to cut off the financial resources of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Trump also stated that he will meet with his national security advisors about the best method of response to the attack against the Saudi oil facilities which has been linked to Iran.
Mike Pompeo and Saudi Arabian officials have said that there is evidence that shows Iran is responsible for the attacks. They claim that the attacks were not done by the Iran-backed Houthis of Yemen as the militia group has claimed, but by Iran itself.
Pompeo called the attacks an “attempt to start a war.”
Despite Pompeo’s strong position, Trump has said he will wait for the assessment from the Intelligence community before making his final decision on the use of the military in response to Iran.
The French foreign minister has also said that Houthis’ claim about the attack is not credible and France will wait for the result of intelligence assessments.
An American official has told France News Agency that the evidence of the involvement of Iranian cruise missiles in the attack will be presented next week to the UN general assembly.
