President of Lebanon asks Iran to release Nizar Zakka from prison

According to ILNA, President Michel Aoun has asked Iranian officials to release Nizar Zakka. Zakka is a Lebanese citizen incarcerated in Iran for the past three years on the charge of espionage.

ILNA, a state-owned news agency writes: “Due to the role and significance of the president of Lebanon in supporting the resistance movement, his request will be reviewed in a positive light and most likely approved.”

Zakka is also a U.S resident and an expert in information technology and an internet freedom activist. In 2016, Iran confirmed that Zakka has been arrested on the charge of espionage.

He was officially invited to Iran by Shahindokht Molaverdi, Rouhani’s vice president in women and family affairs at the time, to attend a seminar on the role of women in progress and job creation.

After his travel to Iran and attending the seminar, he was arrested by the security forces. This was his fourth trip to Iran. Zakka had been invited by Iranian officials before. But this time he was arrested in the airport as he was leaving the country.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and $4 million in fines.

The state TV called Zakka a “treasure” who has vast connections with American military institutions.
