Pompeo: Khamenei doesn't want his people hearing the truth

In a recent tweet, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the Islamic Republic has rejected his offer to travel to Tehran and talk to the Iranian people.

He tweeted: “I recently offered to travel to Tehran and speak directly to the Iranian people. The regime hasn’t accepted my offer.”

Pompeo made the offer on July 25, in an interview with Bloomberg TV: “I’d like a chance to go (to Tehran), not do propaganda but speak the truth to the Iranian people about what it is their leadership has done and how it has harmed Iran.”

Pompeo asked in a second tweet: “We aren’t afraid of Zarif coming to America where he enjoys the right to speak freely. Are the facts of the Khamenei’s regime so bad he cannot let me do the same thing in Tehran? What if his people heard the truth, unfiltered, unabridged?”

On Sunday, the spokesperson for Iran’s government accepted Pompeo’s request for an interview with the state-TV and suggested that Marzieh Hashemi, the Iranian American reporter for Press Tv can do the interview.

But the president of Press TV immediately responded that the network does not intend to do an interview with Pompeo.

The United States and the Islamic Republic cut ties since 1979 and after the hostage crisis at the American embassy in Tehran. Since then no American official has had an interview with the state TV.
