Norwegian Insurer: IRGC “Highly Likely” Responsible for Attack on Tankers

A report by a Norwegian insurer company about the attack on four tankers in Fujairah port, states that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are “Highly-Likely” responsible for facilitating the attack.

On Sunday, May 12, four ships in Fujairah port that belonged to Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Norway, were attacked and damaged by explosions. After the explosions, the officials of the three countries are investigating the cause and those responsible for the attacks.

According to Reuters, the Norwegian insurer’s report states that the attack was executed by underwater drones carrying 30 to 50 kg bombs which were being guided by a ship nearby.

The company has concluded that the IRGC is responsible for the attack due to these reasons:

First, IRGC had previously provided similar underwater drones to Houthis of Yemen. The remains of the bomb are similar to the model that Houthis had used before. Although Houthis had used the bomb on the surface.

Second, Iran and specifically IRGC had recently threatened to use military weapons and that they could “deny it” because Iranian forces were not directly involved. The company emphasizes that the attacks caused limited damage and they were executed when USS Abraham Lincoln was still far from the Persian Gulf.

The attacks did some damage to the motor rooms of one of Saudi Arabia’s tankers and the UAE tanker, but the other Saudi Arabian tanker’ body and the Norwegian tanker’s body were severely damaged.

According to the insurer, the attacks were being guided six to ten miles away from Fujairah port and near the Strait of Hormuz.

The insured concludes that these attacks could be a message from Iran to the United States and its allies in the region, that Iran does not need to block the Strait of Hormuz in order to disrupt transportations in the region. The company predicts the possibility of similar attacks in the future.

Previously, two American officials had told Reuters that they are certain that Iran has ordered Houthis to attack the tankers.
