Javaid Rehman, the British-Pakistani legal scholar and United Nations’ Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran was reinstated for one more year.

The UN Human Rights Council voted 22 to 7 with 18 abstention for extending Mr. Rehman’s mission for one more year.

Mr. Rehman was appointed as United Nations’ Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran since June 2018 after the death of his predecessor Asma Jahangir due to heart attack.

During his time, Rehman has released two reports on Human Rights in Iran. In his first report in October, he demanded the Islamic Republic n to cease torture and other inhumane treatment of prisoners and all the violations of women’s rights, and to respect the rights of ethnicities and minorities in Iran. He also asked Tehran to allow him to travel to Iran.

He provided hi second report to the human rights council last month. In it, he reported that he had tried to contact Iranian officials 14 times, and only received an answer three times.

In the second report, Rehman paid special attention to the treatment of protesters by the regime.

He underlined that the continuation of protests in Iran shows long-term discontent of the people with the human rights conditions in Iran.

The second report also focused on the inhumane treatment of minorities, labor activists, teachers, and journalists.

Iran has always denied all the allegations of human rights violations.
