Reports of at least 30 Iranian prisoners and guards contracting CORVID-19

With the reports of the spread of coronavirus in prisons and infecting dozens of prisoners and guards, the judiciary officials of the Islamic Republic are yet to take any measure to provide medical treatment or offer temporary leave of absence.

According to the reports from media and families of the prisoners, until Tuesday, March 3, at least 30 prisoners in Tehran and other cities including Urmia have been reported with CORVID-19 symptoms. One prison guard in Evin prison has also been infected with coronavirus.

Also, based on some reports, a number of transgender prisoners in Evin prison’s ward 240 have been transferred to the medical ward.

Recently, family members of some political prisoners wrote a letter to the judiciary officials asking them to send the prisoners on temporary leave until the end of coronavirus crisis.

Mother of incarcerated journalist Hengameh Shahidi, and husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, have both reported that they have contacted with them in Evin prison and that they have confirmed witnessing CORVID-19 symptoms in prison.

According to the reports, at least 19 prisoners in Tehran have been transferred to Yaft-Abad hospital and seven are being kept in the medical ward.

The prisoners have reported that despite their constant demands for medical gloves, masks, and disinfectants, the officials have ignored their requests and refused to provide them with any preventive measures.
