Iran's Parliament: Child Marriage Ban Is Against Sharia

Representative Tayebeh Siavoshi, reported that Majlis (Islamic Republic parliament) has denied the banning of child-marriage.

According to her, the reason was that the bill was considered against Sharia and “a copy of Western laws”.

Molaverdi, vice president in women’s affairs also confirmed that the bill has failed and that she will focus on the bill for violence against women.

According to Islamic Republic laws, the minimum age of marriage for girls is 13 and for boys, it is 15. But the law also states that marriages under those ages are permitted by “parents’ permission” and “decision of a fair court”.

In 2014 UNESCO asked the Islamic Republic to fix this law. But they have not yet responded.
