Iran Issues a Statement Against UN Human Rights Rapporteur

On Sunday, Iran’s High Council of Human Rights issued a statement in response to the reinstatement of Javaid Rehman, United Nations Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran, and once again described his appointment as “illegitimate and unjustifiable” and claimed that Mr. Rehman’s behavior has been in clear violation of many resolutions.

In the statement by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights which is a department of the judiciary, it is claimed that: “The Islamic Republic of Iran is the most important and modern democracy of Western Asia and even the world.”

The statement continued: “Appointing a special rapporteur for the Islamic Republic of Iran …. is clearly and unjustifiable, illegitimate, and a politically deceitful act.”

The statement labels the reports provided by Mr. Rehman about human rights violation in Iran as “a political show” and says the rapporteur is cooperating with “murderers and terrorists” in order to write his report.

It also calls Mr. Rehman as a “host for the propaganda programs of Washington, London, Paris, ad Tel-Aviv”.

On Friday, the United Nations human rights council voted to extend Mr. Rehman’s mission for one more year.

Mr. Rehman has been the special rapporteur since June of 2018. During this time, he has provided two reports and asked the Islamic Republic officials repeatedly to allow him to travel to Iran.

Aside from the highest rate of executions in the world, Iran is one of the largest prisons of the world for journalists.
