Iran’s Parliament to bring lawsuit against Hollywood "institute"

A member of the judicial committee of the Islamic Republic’s parliament (Majlis) announced a draft is being prepared for a “lawsuit against Hollywood” with 180 signatures from the MPs.

Mohammad Ali Pourmokhtar demanded the Islamic Republic’s conventional filtering to be imposed on movie production and distribution in America, saying: “Hollywood is an official movie institution which presents false and fake images of the Iranian society and the Islamic Republic government of Iran. In a way, Hollywood is at war with us.”

“The parliament’s lawsuit against Hollywood has been delivered for voting and will be discussed in the upcoming days,” Pourmokhtar said.

Pourmokhtar also mentioned US sanctions against Iran, and added: “According to the bill, the government of the Islamic Republic will be obligated to bring lawsuits in international courts against the American movie and TV industry, Hollywood, for insulting the nation of Iran and Iran’s history in its cinematic products.”

According to this MP: “The United States attempts to assassinate the character of Iranians, their history, and even their civilization, not just through sanctions but through propaganda and cultural and artistic methods. Like making movies such as 300 which is strongly anti-Iranian, and disrespectful to Iranian culture and beliefs. This act of the United States is against the International Charter of Human Rights.”

The member of the judicial committee claimed: “Hollywood is an official movie institution that works toward the overall goals of the United States.” He also called for censorship and preventing such movies from being made: “In our own country, if a movie is made to attack a certain group or a party, it will be stopped and there are filtering levels for movies to be made and distributed.”

“If we want to sue the cast and crew of the movies, it might be pointless because it is the Hollywood institute that allows these movies to be distributed,” claimed Pourmokhtar.
