Exclusive: Voter turnout in Iran’s parliamentary election at 25 percent

 

According to information received by Iran International, the turnout at the voting stations for the parliamentary elections that took place on Friday in Iran, was, at 5 PM Iran time, at 16% for Tehran, the capital city, and 25% for the whole country.

According to the report, after Tehran, Alborz province with 17 percent had the lowest voter turnout in the country.

Participation in most provinces, including Isfahan, Khuzestan, Khorasan Razavi, Fars, and East Azerbaijan, was less than 30 percent.

The political deputy of Semnan province confirmed that until 4 PM, voter turnout in this province was at 24 percent.

The governor of Isfahan city, Hossein Sistani, announced that the voter turnout for the parliamentary election in Isfahan was at 21.19 percent.

The governor of Mashhad city, Mohammad-Reza Hashemi, confirmed that only some 30 percent of residents of Mashhad have participated in the election.

After the bloody suppression of November protests across Iran, dissident groups of all sides called for the boycott of the parliamentary election. The boycott received more support after the shooting down of the Ukrainian plane by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, along with many reformist and fundamentalist officials had asked the nation to participate in the election for the sake of Iran’s national interests.
